Wigan hit back at Roberts in contract row


Wigan striker Jason Roberts has been accused by chairman Dave Whelan of not telling the truth regarding his contract dispute.



Roberts is looking to quit the Latics, despite a successful season for the club last term in which he scored 14 goals.

However, with a year remaining on his current deal, the 28-year-old recently claimed he had been offered a new contract which was 'disrespectful'.

That is far from accurate according to Whelan, who along with boss Paul Jewell has been left dismayed by Roberts' accusations.

'We respect Jason a lot, and don't think that's not the case because he has done really well for us and we would like to keep him,' said Whelan.

'But it's apparent he wants to go, for some reason believing he is worth a lot more money on a weekly basis than we are prepared to pay him.

'He came out and said we offered a contract that was disrespectful. In fact we haven't offered him a contract at all. We've not even had negotiations.'

Whelan added: 'He has said things that are very, very untrue.

'The manager is upset, and he gets that way with any player who is not honest and does not tell the truth.

'He has to accept we've not done anything wrong, and the fact he is still our player for another 12 months.

'Unless somebody comes in with the right offer, then he stays with us.

'At this moment I wouldn't say there's no way back, but he has set the ball rolling and insulted the club with his comments.'

Recently-relegated West Brom, Turkish side Besiktas, and an unspecified Premiership club have all had bids rejected by Wigan.

It may yet be the case Roberts is forced to see out his contract and then walk away next summer.

'We know Jason wants to leave, but whether we let him go is another matter,' added Whelan.

'We've had two or three offers for him, but as yet nobody has paid the price we're asking for, and we're looking for around £3million.

'When they do we will probably let him go.'
