"HAMBURG, Germany (AFP) - SV Hamburg have admitted defeat in their bid to sign French defender Jean-Alain Boumsong from English side Newcastle United.
After selling Dutch international defender Khalid Boulahrouz to Chelsea for close to 13 million euros Hamburg targeted Boumsong as a replacement but the player has snubbed the German giants. "Boumsong will not be signing for us," Hamburg sporting director Dietmar Beiersdorfer told television channel DSF.
Former France international Boumsong, 26, cost Newcastle 8.5 million pounds from Rangers but has failed to make the grade and the club are willing to cut their losses.
The Frenchman has also been tipped for a move to Marseille, and to fellow French first division club Lens. However the player's wage demands have proved a stumbling block for both clubs."
