Mircea Lucescu: I feel comfortable in Donetsk



On 17 May a group of journalists went to the Shakhtar training centre in Kirsha where they spoke to the Miners' head coach, Mircea Lucescu.

The Salon Dona i Basa, Ihor Sidorov: Yesterday you have celebrated your third year at Shakhtar. Could you, please, evaluate this period?
- The time has gone by very swiftly. I couldn't even imagine I'd feel so well and comfortable here, in Donetsk. I think these were the successful three years. Shakhtar have considerably developed since my arrival. You can see it by the team's games at the international stage. We have ensured Ukraine's higher position in the UEFA ranking list and of all Ukrainian teams in this list we possess the highest position. I admit, we could have performed better. Remember how we failed to beat Lille last year and lost to Sevilla this season. Now we know that then we had not enough experience to take all those opportunities we had. I am sure that Shakhtar has brilliant future, this team's potential is enormous. We are able to grow.
TRK Ukraina, Konstantyn Frolov: You speak many languages, but still not able to speak Russian. Why?
- I have no problems with the Russian language. My Russian is good enough to be able to communicate with the players. I am trying not to use Russian in interviews to avoid misunderstandings. I don't want people to laugh at me. In this respect Fatih Terim is coming to my mind: when he started to work with the Serie A clubs he thought he was obliged to speak Italian. He became the laughing stock of the Italian television! The same was with Giovanni Trapattoni in Germany. I think it is better for a coach to use the language he is fluent in to convey his thoughts to the players and to the journalists. So, don't bother about my Russian.
- After Tigana got sacked, there were rumours in the Turkish press that Besiktas wanted you back.
- Yes, today in Besiktas, tomorrow in Galatasaray, the day after tomorrow in Fenerbahçe. The press do right a lot on it. When a team is facing a problem, they start thinking about me. But it is good that they remember me. it is very important to know that you have left some heritage behind. I think they appreciate it in Turkey. My contract with Shakhtar expires in two years and I am not going to quit earlier.
- What can you say about the forthcoming match. What do you think of the excitement that grasped Lviv. Prices for the tickets had soared.
- I am expecting a very tough match. But, I repeat, I don't want anybody have illusions. It is likely that we lost this Championship. Even if we beat Karpaty and Dynamo, I don't thing the Kyiv team will lose points in any other match. We could have changed our destiny before the matches against Dnipro and Kharkiv. But, I am afraid, we made some mistakes then when we were evaluating the situation.
Next season, I hope, there will be at least another two Clubs able to compete with Shakhtar and Dynamo. But even now I am concerned that the the level of the Ukrainian League has increased.
I assure you that we are going to Lviv to win and to take our chance to finish the season successfully. I think the atmosphere at the stadium will be great like it was two years ago in the Cup final. I wish the conditions were better this year and there won't be any scandals and nobody will throw bottles on the pitch. Karpaty are a good team who deserve their position in the League table. I hope it will be every interesting and spectacular game that will delight the fans.
- You are acquainted with Michel Platini. Do you think he'd like to come to Lviv to see the match?
- Yes we know each other. In my time we happened to exchange T-Shirts. Platini is a young President. He is the one who is helping to revive the Cup Winners' Cup. Sometimes small clubs perform better in the cup than some famous teams. This competition will give them a chance to play at the European level.
The Gorod, Vadym Krasnov: quite a number of Shakhtar players may be disqualified if they get cautioned just one more time. Are you taking this fact into consideration building the lineup?
- I am taking into consideration absolutely everything what concerns my players. I think in some cases Shakhtar players' fault had been exaggerated and referees shouldn't have showed them yellow cards. It happened so that these cards were shown to our main players.
- I'd like to ask you about the press conference that was held after the match in Simferopol. You have worked in many countries, have you ever faced such an attitude?
- Unfortunately such behaviour is common in Ukraine. Sometimes it seemed that press conferences are attended not only by journalists but by football fans as well. the later prevail in number. Why do they go there? I think just to display their importance, to create an unhealthy atmosphere and digress us from our work. From now on I'll be leaving press conferences if i feel that people have no respect for the invited specialists.
