The Frenchman, signed from Chelsea last week, is primarily a centre half but will fill in at Arsenal’s problem position because Johan Djourou has recovered from his shoulder injury and will retain his place alongside Kolo Toure at the heart of the backline.

“William’s best position is centre back. He can play either side but if you ask him he will tell you his best position is centre back. But we are short at the back and on the left especially at the moment.”

GALLED GALLAS

Gallas has more reason to feel aggrieved. He has asked for and still not received a run in his preferred position of centre-half. Maybe such decisions should be left to the manager - Mourinho has every right to pick the team as he sees fit - but Gallas is clearly unhappy with the situation and deserves a chance elsewhere.

Gallas (left, with Mourinho) has consistently complained about his situation - often tiresomely - for a long time now, long enough to be taken seriously. He simply does not enjoy playing at full-back. Mourinho should understand that and allow him to leave.
